In February, Governor Pataki and Mayor Bloomberg stood alongside Daniel Libeskind as he unveiled a majestic vision for rebuilding Ground Zero. Studio Libeskind's master plan answered the public call for something truly special and remarkable, an innovation that would create a globally recognized icon for New York's rebirth and a magnet for visitors from around the world. At the heart of the plan, though, was a moving and sacred memorial space that truly honored those we lost on September 11.

While not everyone agreed on the plan, it was the result of a historic public process. Tens of thousands of people participated in two Listening to the City events, the Imagine New York roundtables and the official public input process hosted by LMDC. The public was led to believe that the plan that emerged from this extraordinary process would be implemented, at least in spirit.

Unfortunately, in the months following its selection that visionary plan has been subject to attack from all sides. It has become business-as-usual in the very worst way, as the integrity of the master plan has been gradually undermined by private interests.

It is vital that you understand what's going on behind closed doors. The illustrations on this page show what these all-too-real attacks on the master plan would look like if we don't speak up now:

• The elimination of the sacred memorial space in favor of a windswept plaza for commuters to rush through each day.

• The addition of yet another office building on the site, this one looming over the PATH station that was supposed to let in air and light.

• Construction of an enclosed mega-mall wrapped around the supposedly sacred memorial site.

• Completion of a series of mundane office buildings that look like an average office park.
